Search Engine Optimization

JUST BECAUSE YOU BUILD IT...
...doesn’t mean they will come! A new website will help you get your message out to existing customers, assuming you do the right thing and include the address on ALL of your business communications. But your new site will not automatically appear at the top of the search engines – that takes a lot of hard work and expertise in a constantly-evolving environment.

There are two ways to "get found" on Google, Yahoo, MSN and other internet search engines. The quick way is to invest in a pay-per-click advertising program. Perhaps you found this website by clicking on one of my own ads. As shown below, these ads generally appear on the right side or very top of the search results page. The second way of getting your site noticed takes more time and effort, but it can really pay off. Your site can be optimized to rate highly in the natural or "organic" listings for whatever important words or phrases you think potential customers would use for a web search. These are the listings that generally appear on the left side of the page, as illustrated above.

There are several ways of doing this: finding other respected sites who are willing to add links to your site; editing and repositioning your text; proper use of "meta" tags and page titles and other techniques. A good web designer will take search engine optimization into consideration for the initial design of your site. But if your site isn't drawing traffic, search engine optimization may be an investment worth considering.
